Purbatua a village in the Tapanuli region in north Sumatra where forest has been maintained for a long time without clear-cutting and still yields the indigenous product benzoin provides an example of rational land use. A wide range of sizes of benzoin trees is maintained under pine trees to ensure a sustained yield and harvest of benzoin. Density of benzoin trees (Styrax spp.) including seedlings and samplings was estimated at 1 374/ha in some of these stands. Seedlings of benzoin trees are transplanted to the pine stand and the density is gradually increased. Recently limited coffee-planting within some stands has been tried and although not many benzoin seedlings or saplings are maintained the big benzoin trees are used as shade trees.
