Abstract

Shifting cultivation is an important agricultural practice in the mountain areas of Xishuangbanna. However the resulting deforestation causes environmental problems. The increase in local population shortened fallow period from 8-10 years to 3-5 years. The soil fertility could not be restored in such a short duration. There are alternatives to shifting cultivation
