Abstract

The effect of water deprivation on photosynthetic rate in sorghum infected with Striga hermonthica was studied. A reduction in the photosynthetic rate was observed for Striga-infected sorghum plant. Such a reduction was independent of the degree of stomatal opening as described by A/Ci responses. Higher root fraction in infected hosts than in uninfected hosts was associated with the transfer of water from the host to the parasite. A possibility of a complementry effect has been speculated which could be the hardening process as a result of the parasite infection.
