Abstract
The Asian sea bass Lates calcarifer has been farmed in various Asian countries for many decades. In Australia sea bass is known as barramundi and its culture began in the mid 1980's. The objectives were:-firstly to develop a farming industry and secondly to supply fingerlings for enhancement of recreational fisheries in lakes and rivers in the tropical regions of the country. Sea bass was an ideal candidate to fulfill these objectives because of its ability to live in salt and fresh water its reputation as a sporting fish its fine edible qualities and its consistently high market price. While the culture technique is successfully developed its potential to become a major contributor to Australian aquaculture depend on resolving two major constraints.
