Abstract

The dissipation rate of carbaryl in soil was determined at two locations. The first plot was situated in a farm and the second plot in an enclosed area of a greenhouse. The soils obtained from both locations were categorised as sandy clay soil composed of clay (42 percent) sand (55 percent) and gravel (2 percent) with a pH value of 5.0 plus minus 0.2. Sampling was done at different depths. Carbaryl (2000 ppm) was incorporated into the upper layer and random sampling was performed on different days. The amount of carbaryl in the soil samples was determined using the ELISA method. The results of the study showed a decrease in the level of carbaryl up to the 14th day. On day 0 soil samples obtained from the farm and the greenhouse contained 330 ppm and 520 ppm of carbaryl respectively while none was detected in the second and third layers from both plots. This was likely due to the presence of the same species of soil bacteria and organic matter in both plots. A strain of Pseudomonas which was resistant to carbaryl was isolated from the soil. The carbaryl in the soils studied demonstrated a half-life of approximately 6 days
