Pushparajah E., . The oil palm - a very environmental friendly crop. pp. 63-72. ISSN 0126-575X
Abstract
The paper considers the impact of oil palm cultivation on the environment. The review shows that the soil carbon content increases with time and the palm tree is also a carbon sink. Compared to other major vegetable oil seeds (e.g. soyabean sunflower and rapeseed) palm oil is the latest demanding on fossil energy and need for chemicals. Additionally even in the processing of the new produce to obtain oil the oil palm is more environmental friendly as it needs less fuel energy and is not dependent on solvents for oil extraction. More important however is that palm oil processing produces less pollutant crops and at the same time eliminates/removes more of the pollutants from the process wastes than other crops. Thus oil palm cultivation and palm oil processing are environmental friendly practices.
