Sanderson F.R., . and Pilotti C.A., . Ganoderma basal stem rot: an enigma or just time to rethink an old problem. pp. 489-493. ISSN 0126-575X
Abstract
If the current control strategies for basal stem rot are not working and the incidence of the disease is still on the increase then perhaps it is time to take a fresh look at this problem. Details on the methods of infection and spread of this disease were first published in 1993 (Thompson 1993). Sixty-four years later it is still accepted that primary infection is through the roots of young palms coming into contact with Ganoderma invade plant material and that secondary spread away from this point is by root to root contact. This however has never been fully substantiated. All evidence is circumstantial. The main evidence cited for this hypothesis is that if given a sufficient inoculumsource or by planting close enough to an infected stump around 100 per cent of seedlings become infected by Ganoderma die and produce brackets of the fungus.
