Abstract

Data were collected on calves born in 1991 as part of a crossbreeding program at one of the Malaysian Agriculture and Development Institute (MARDI) research centers. Birth weight was lightest (17.3 (plus minus) 0.8 kg) for indigenous cattle the Kedah-Kelantan (KK) and heaviest for Charolais x Kedah-Kelantan (CK) (23.6 (plus minus) 1.6 kg) Simmental x Kedah-Kelantan (SK) (22.9 (plus minus) 0.9 kg ) followed by Limousin x Kedah-Kelantan (LK) (20.9 (plus minus) 1.1 kg) Brahman x Kedah-Kelantan (BK) (21.0 (plus minus) 1.6 kg) Hereford x Kedah-Kelantan (HK) (18.3 (plus minus) 3 kg). At weaning SK (121.0 (plus minus) 5.8 kg) was heaviest with CK LK HK and BK intermediate and KK ligthest (79.5 (plus minus) 3.7 kg). At 9 months and 12 months SK (156.2 (plus minus) 7.8 kg and 212 kg (plus minus) 5.8 kg) was heaviest and KK lightest (101.1 (plus minus) 8.8 kg and 130.1 kg (plus minus) 3.9 kg) and other crossbred calves were intermediate. Effect of sires was significant on all the growth traits studied
