Abstract

Fully enclosed poultry houses especially for breeders are increasing in popularity. Unless the internal air is conditioned the enclosed house would heat up to temperatures above ambient. This can be achieved by air conditioning forced ventilation or evaporative cooling techniques. Data collected from an empty naturally ventilated environmental house indicate that it is possible to design a fully enclosed building without overheating compared to a normally enclosed residential building. Simulations using broiler heat production models in relation to the chamber characteristics and ambient conditions indicate the feasibility of a fully enclosed house for broiler production. It was also shown that a temperature drop of 2 degree Celsius during the mid-day could be achieved with the use of evaporative cooling techniques
