Fusarium wilt disease in commercial banana production

Abstract

Fusarium will of bananas (Panama disease) is becoming a major problem in banana production in Malaysia attributable to the increasing hectarage planted with susceptible clones and the new occurrence of a highly virulent race of the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f sp cubense in Peninsular Malaysia. An update on the disease situation is presented together with a report on the genetic variability of the fungus and the disease resistance/susceptibility of native and introduced banana cultivars. Strategies for managing disease problem and minimising the losses caused and spread of the pathogen are discussed.
