Abstract

In enhancing the development of sustainable methods for controlling pests and diseases and nutrition of tree crops under IPM inventing or improving the techniques in pesticide application as well as the tools to go with them constitutes an essential pre-requisite. The novel technique of direct placement of some chemicals by stem injection has prompted a recent invention of a light portable pressurised injector aimed at replacing the non-pressurised ordinary plastic syringes or spring-loaded plastic ones used to-date. This paper describes the new manually operated injector that is carried as a backpack during field use. It is constructed of metal comprising a small-sized nozzle in front of a short longitudinal chamber connected to two handle bars. For injection hand clasping once to draw in a fixed amount of the liquid chemical followed by that of a return outward action forcefully discharges it safely into a small shallow hole pre-drilled into the outer wood of the tree stem or trunk under treatment. Its introduction will help speed up adoption of the more sustainable method of chemical stem injection on plantation trees under IPM in place of the conventional spray or soil drench.
