Abstract

The paper reveals that plantation agriculture especially oil palm is expanding in Sarawak. With up to 2.5 million ha of land suitable for agriculture existing in Sarawak the area cultivated is expected to increase. A considerable area of the land comes under Customary Land Rights. To facilitate development joint venture activities have been clearly defined. At the same time to ensure that the environment is maintained the State Government has clearly defined areas to be maintained under permanent totaly protected forest areas etc. At the same time where agricultural development is to take place in fragile ecosystems of peat areas etc environmental impact assessment is mandatory. Nevertheless scope for investments in oil palm and plantation forests is high.
