Abstract

This article discusses the use and usefulness of a plantation management software system - Plantation Agriculture eXpert SYStem -PAXSYS - developed by ARAB to act as an enterprise decision support system in the management of estates. The system was developed for oil palm (PAXSYS for Oil Palm). In today's operating environment an oil palm plantation's efficiency in the production process is achieved not only through increased yields but also by minimising unjustifiable operational expenditures - an objective that is significantly aided by the deployment of new and improved agro-technologies and research and development findings. Management whose responsibility it is to effect this deployment has to do this efficiently - and hence the establishment of an estate information infrastructure and decision support system to support management in using the latest agro-technical knowledge and economic decision principles is imperative. This is particularly true as an organisation grows or scales up to large hectarages with the attendant dilution in management supervision.
