Abstract
Cattle rearing under oil palm is being referred to regularly recently. this activity is being highlighted even more due to the recent depreciation in value of the Malaysian currency and thus the need to cut down on imports of meat to reduce losses in foreign exchange. The paper discusses the introduction of cattle for biological weed control and meant production under oil palm in the ESPEK Estates. The aim is to utilise cattle to graze on the feed resources available under oil palm. By grazing cattle under controlled system a substantial cost saving on maintenance is achieved. Fattening of animals from these feed resources for meat production and a revenue derived from the sale of these cattle are discussed. Development of breeding herds for production of good quality meat animals and the methods of breeding carried out in this company is also described. The importance of forage management under older oil palm is also discussed.
