Abstract

The Melaleuca forest is often looked upon as waste land that is waiting to be converted. It is actually an ecologically complex system which provides direct consumptive and nonconsumptive uses. The latter uses are of interest owing to the ecological functions and benfits supported by the ecosystem. These functions are not well understood by the community. But the values derived from consumptive uses such as the collection of gelam poles as fences firewood and raw materials for charcoal production are clearly understood. This paper assesses the financial values of this forest to the rural community.
