Abstract

In Sapi complex (19 200 ha) the most common leaf-eating pests encountered are the M. corbetti D. trima and S. nitens. In our past experience pest populations normally build up around November peaking in April coinciding with period of low rainfall. There is also a tendency for the pest to frequent areas which are subject to frequent flooding and where palm canopy are close and are overlapping. Both of these factors contributed to a ground cover which are devoid or lack flowering plants. A multifaceted approach which involve the judicious use of chemical biological cultural and physical control are being adopted as counter measures and has succesfully contained the problem to a certain extent. The gist of pest control is to rapidly restore the delicate balance between pest and its natural enemies.
