Abstract
The redistribution of boric acid in the stem of rattan (Calamus manan Miq.) which had been treated with aqueous boric acid equivalent (BAE 5 per cent w/w) solution by vacuum-pressure process after drying and exposure to humid condition was analysed. Air drying of treated rattan alters the distribution of boron in the material. The retention of BAE in rotan manau was reduced by 17.14 per cent in the inner layer and by 27.13 per cent in the central and in the outer layer it was increased by 33.78 per cent. The drying process however did not significantly reduce the total retention of boric acid in the material. The change in BAE distribution in rotan manau after drying and subsequent equilibration at 80 per cent humidity was similar. The slight reduction in BAE retention in the wetter samples is presumably due to the greater loss of boric acid in the water vapour when the samples were dried at high temperatures.
