Abstract
Two-nodal cuttings obtained from 5-month-old seedlings with two leaves trimmed of half were rooted in a non-mist propagator following treatment with 0 0.2 0.4 or 0.8 percent Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) solution. The rooted cuttings were transferred to polythene pots 16 days after setting and grown in a nursery for three months. Then they were outplanted in the field. Rooting success was 100 percent for IBA treated and control cuttings. Mean root number increased with IBA concentrations. Significantly enhanced height growth was observed in outplanted stecklings developed from cuttings treated with 0.4 or 0.8 percent IBA. Maximum mean height of 1.75 m was obtained for 0.4 percent IBA treatment 105 days after outplanting. Stockplants three months old seedlings were planted at a planting distance of 40 cm x 40 cm in three beds each of 1.5 m x 10 m size laid at north-south direction and parallel to each other. Topping of 50 saplings was done in the middle bed at 12 or 30 cm above ground 12 months after planting and shoot/cutting production studied for two consecutive harvets 4-week for the first harvest and 6-week for the second harvest. Newly developed shoots experienced vegetational shade light caused by the saplings growing on other two beds. Shoot/cutting production was not significantly affected by stump heights. Likewise cutting yield was not significantly influenced by partial harvest or longer growth period. Maximum extension growth took place within four weeks of sprouting. Vigorously growing shoot attained 6-8 nodal stage with an average length of 30 cm four weeks after topping/harvest. Harvesting interval of 4-week was found sufficient for the production of 17 one-nodal cuttings per stump.
