Abstract
One of the major problems identified in most mature areas in FELDA schenes and estates is the early declining yield. In this areas yield increases with palm age up to about 10-12 years after field planting. This is followed by declining yield at the palm age of 14 to 16 years. Such declining yield is always accompanied with close planting. Insufficient sunlight for normal growth and production resulted in early and fast declining yield and excessive height increment. Hence the solution to sustain high production is through thinning. Furthermore slower height increment through thinning will also extend the economic life of the palms. The need for thinning is a priority area in many FELDA schemes and estates as many palms have reached 16 years and above.
