Abstract

Thirty three clones have been planted by FELDA in four trials on inland soils. These trials were laid down in randomized complete block design. Trial C3 planted in 1987 on Katong series soil consisted of seven clones - six of La Me and one of NIFOR origin. Trial C7 planted in 1989 on Durian series soil consisted of four La Me three NIFOR and one Yangambi clones. Trials C12 and C13 were planted in 1990 on Durian series soil. Trial C12 consisted of eight La Me one NIFOR and one Yangambi clones while Trial C13 consisted of eight La Me clones. With the exception of Trial C3 all the clones from the other trials were derived from selected ortets. The trials were evaluated independentlybecause there was no common standard DxP control for the trials. All the clones performed better than their DxP controls. Oustanding clones were identified from each trial. Clones with high oil to bunch ratio produced high oil yield although their FFB yields were not exceptional. La Me clones which were extensively selected from inland plantings performed as well as the Yangambi clones if not better. The correlation and regression analyses on the older clones showed that the oil components were strongly heritable and appeared to be inherited through cloning. It is apparent that future clones selected on the same basis will be ready for maximum yield exploitation under low abnormality level. With experience gained through the years FELDA has developed a protocol which has kept the abnormality level to as low as below 3 percent.
