Abstract
The oil palm is a perennial tree crop which is replanted when it reaches the end of its economic lifespan ranging from 20-25 years. Replanting is a very important aspect of oil palm cultivation because not only does it provide the opportunity to correct past mistakes in layout drainage and planting density it also enables the use of the latest generation of planting materials together with the improved agronomic techniques. Various factors must be considered before deciding to replant. Important steps in carrying out a successful replant involve proper planning co-ordination and timing. U P Bhd practices the UPCP system of land clearing which essentially combines the zero-burn concept with provision to control Oryctes (via managing the biomass of the previous stand) and facilitates future infield mechanisation operations. In order to exploit the full yield potential of the improved D x P materials due emphasis is placed to ensure that there is no compromise in the level of agronomic inputs husbandry and management practices starting from the nursery to planting put in the field. A high degree of attention is also placed in improving the growing conditions by establishing LCC timely weed management pest and disease control and a high level of husbandry during the important formative years during immaturity. Field supervision is singled out as an important key factor in ensuring that all operations are carried out in a proper manner. The impact of these practices on the performance of plantings is reflected by the salutary yields achieved. Replanting also contributed positively in sustaining high OER with higher peak yields (more than 30 tonnes FFB per hectare per year) being achieved sooner (i.e. from 10-14-year old palms to 5-9 year old palms).
