Abstract

Although the scale of oil palm replanting in Sabah is limited in comparison with Peninsular Malaysia it can only increase in prominence as the crop matures. A review of the factors influencing the timing and mode of oil palm replanting in the east coast region of the state is presented together with the advantages and drawbacks of the main replanting approaches. Underplanting which was favoured half a decade ago is now less popular due to the fear of pest associated problems as well as the need to institute infrastructural changes at replanting for future mechanisation. The common practice is to replant oil palm by clean clearing mechanical chipping together with zero burning. Indicative costings of the separate tasks involved in replanting and productivity rates for mechanical felling and cipping in the region are reported.
