Abstract
Initial introduction of cattle in YPJOPE's estate was to alleviate labour problem for weeding. Grazing is controlled with the use of electric fencing and rotated at intervals of 90-120 days. Forage supplement is not required but dosages of vitamins and salts are necessary. Operation cost ranges from RM6.33 to RM6.55 per head per month. Grazing by the cattle does not eliminate work like circle spraying and selective weeding but it helps to reduce the number of rounds required. Overall weeding cost is reduced by about 30 per cent and labour requirement reduced by about 39 per cent. One of the important factors to be considered for introduction of cattle in mature oil palm is the acceptance of the project by the management team. Commitment and concern shown by all levels are essential. Cattle integration not only helps to reduce weeding cost but also saving of foreign exchange for importation of beef which contributes up to 80 per cent of the nation's requirement.
