Abstract

The Malaysian vegetable farms are small in size unorganised and are still relying on low technological inputs and heavy pesticide usage. Standard procedures in vegetable production in Malaysia at the present moment are lacking. This paper describes the production of vegetables using the lates precision agrotechnology involving aeroponics a soil-less culture where roots are suspended in air and intermittently pulse-misted with spray of chilled nutrients. It highlights the potential of this innovation. The feasibility to grow temperate and sub-tropical premium quality vegetables under the lowland conditions is discussed. The aeroponics technology synergises very well with the netted 'greenhouse method of protecting the vegetable from pest damage. Coupled with strict husbandry and cultural practices the use of pesticides is avoided. Further this technology is efficient in water and land usage and the farming system is environmentally friendly.
