Abstract

The Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) has the largest collection of Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera germplasm in the world. Nearly 150 000 palms in over 1000 ha of germplasm gardens are being evaluated for oil yield kernel content height harvest index fatty acid composition carotene and vitamin E contents. Among the collection elite dura and tenera palms have been selected from the Nigerian germplasm for yield dwarfness and high iodine value. These palms have been selfed and progeny tested with the Deli durans to develop PORIM series PS1 and PS2 planting materials. The method of producing PS1 and PS2 planting materials and the prospects for commercial use of these materials to upgrade oil palm production are discussed in this paper.
