Abstract

Seventy-one species of insects are associated with oil palm out of which 20 species are coccoids. Scales and mealy bugs are found as a minor pest of oil palm attacking spindle leaves and fruit bunches. Mealy bugs can be controlled by spraying with phosphamidon/dimethoate at 0.05 percent or methyl demeton at 0.025 per cent. Scale insects can be controlled by spraying with fenthion/malathion 0.1 per cent. Mealy bugs are naturally controlled by many predators of which the ladybird beetles are the most important.
