Abstract
Besides crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel palm oil mills also generate large amounts of by-products-empty fruit bunches (EFB) palm fibre shell and palm oil mill effluent (POME). All these by-products require sound management practices to minimise negative impact on the environment. EFB are recycled to the plantations as mulch by some estates. Fibre and shell are used as boiler fuels by all palm oil mills to generate steam and electricity for palm oil milling. POME is treated to the required discharge limits for land applications or disposal. Due to the public awareness and our commitment to conservation of the environment more stringent discharge standards are expected to be imposed in the near future. Through sound treatment technologies have been developed and implemented by the plam oil industry for more than 20 years not all the mills are able to comply with the discharge limits all the time. As environmental management has become a trade issue the industry needs to be more innovative in addressing this subject. Waste minimisation at source or utilisation is one of the long-term forward looking management strategies. A fool proof zero-discharge system is the ultimate foal. This paper discusses some innovative approaches to abate the pollution woes.
