Abstract
Universities and colleges are good at teaching students how to grow crops to create and to run processing plants. They do not cover the provision of safe and economical road systems essential to facilitate transport of the crop to the mill. This gap is not covered effectively by civil engineering courses which concentrate on sealed roads at costs that would be totaly uneconomic for the planter. The result is that most plantation road systems are ill-planned - if not downright chaotic. The layout construction and maintenace of good plantation road systems is a craft. This paper aims to draw attention to the facts that it is not difficult for any intelligent creative person to become proficient and that the returns in terms of greater safety efficiency cost savings and benefits to the environment are very substantial
