Abstract

The abundance and distribution of protozoan populations in the alimentary system of pseudergate of the lower termite Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light (Kalotermitidae) were studied. The result shows that the protozoa were represented by two major genera Devescovina Foa and Stephanonympha Janicki belonging to the order Trichomonadida. They were all located in the hindgut. The genus Devescovina was the predominant protozoa representing more than 62 per cent of the total 70 787 protozoa per termite. Stephanonympha and other unidentified protozoa represented 32 per cent and 6 per cent respectively.
