Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the zonation and abundance of sponges in Pulau Layang-layang Malaysia. The survey was carried out by scuba divers using line intercept transects at depths of 10 20 and 30cm. Identification was by photo guides and physical appearance. Only 12 species were identified but many more samples were not identified. From the zonation study sponges were found to occupy the deeper zone (30m) especially at the wall-type D'Wall site. The barrel sponge Xestospongia testudinaria was the most abundant large sponge species. Further taxonomic study will be carried out on the most common species.
