Abstract
This study was undertaken in southern Tamil Nadu with a view to highlight the production and marketing aspects of charcoal in Tamil Nadu. On an average the yield of wood realised was approximately 8 t per ha fetching an income of Rs 2500 per y. Benefit cost analysis revealed that production of raw material for charcoal production is feasible. Marketing of charcoal revealed that the producer's share was about 48 percent of the consumer's rupee and it could generate employment opportunities to the tune of 160 man-days per year. The constraints and appropriate strategies were also discussed.
