Abstract

Macaranga timber develops defferent forms of discoloration within a few hours even after the wood surfaces have been treated with pentachlorophenole immediately after felling. This discoloration the frequent long end checks and the occurence of brittle heart result in a considerable low yield of suitable lumber. The two Macaranga species dry very easily and fast. The silica content of the wood is very low. Sawing and planning of the timber is easy resulting in surfaces of good quality but these processes need sharp knives.
