Abstract

Appias libythea (Fabricius) was bred on Cleome rutidosperma (Capparidaceae) a common weed in gardens and roadsides. Eggs of A. libythea were laid singly near the tip of young leaves. These measured about 0.8mm in height with an incubation period of two days. Larvae fed on leaves passing through five larval instars. Newly hatched larvae measured 1.5mm and grew to 35.0mm. The duration of each larval instar was 1.9 1.4 1.5 2.1 and 4.1 days respectively. An analysis of the head capsule width confirmed that five instars were present. The pupa was attached to older leaves by amedian silken girdle. Pupae measured from 17.0 to 23.0mm long and the pupal period was about six days.
