Abstract

Developmental light influences phyllode structure of three humid tropical Acacia species. Seedlings of Acacia auriculiformis A. confusa and A. mangium were grown under 19 44 or 100 per cent sunlight to determine the degree of structural modification expressed by their distinctive phyllodes in the contrasting light environments. Chlorophyllous mesophyll layers and entire phyllodes were thicker for plants in 100 per cent than reduced sunlight. Each mesophyll layer consisted of compact double layers of elongated cells regardless of developmental light level. Thickness of the non-chlorophyllous central parenchyma was not influenced by light. Stomatal density was greater for A. auriculiformis and A. mangium plants in 100 per cent sunlight than in reduced sunlight. Phyllodes from these widespread humid tropical Acacia species expressed modifications to developmental light conditions that are similar to typical Csubscript3 leaves.
