Abstract

Six 8 week trials were conducted over a period of one year to examine the possiblitity and to evaluate the performance and economics of rearing groups of broilers successively on the same litter. In each trial fresh wood shavings were used as the control. In general body weight gain feed intake and feed conversion efficiency of broilers on built-up litter were comparable to the respective performance of the control birds. Low mortality and low incidence of disease were observed in both groups at each trial were significant. Differences in carcass yields were also not significant between treatments and the occurrence of breast blister was low and inconsistent. Over a period of one year covering six crops of 1 100 birds a saving of M131.25 could be made by utilising built-up instead of fresh litters for each new crop. In addition the use of the same litter would solve the problem of old litter disposal ensure non-disruption of the enterprise enable maximum crops to be raised in a year and maximise utilisation of the chicken house. It was concluded that with good litter management the rearing of broilers continuously on the same litter for a period of one year was not only possible but also economical
