Abstract

The results of a study comparing four feeding regimes and their effects on the overall productivity of draught buffaloes in oil palm estates is presented and discussed. The four feeding regimes were total free grazing at all times (T) free grazing plus cut grass and confinement at night and free grazing plus palm kernel cake and confinement at night (T). The mean average daily gain over the 150 days of study was 0.36 kg. with no difference between treatments. The mean total weight gain was 53.9 kg. The productivity of the harvesters working with the animals in T was higher when compared with the other and their daily production was 2.20 tonnes. This however was mostly attributed to the harvesters efficiency rather than the animals. The harvesters performance varied between months but again was not affected by the animals conditions. The mean total working days per month was 20.1. Under normal estate conditions draught buffaloes have sufficient grass as feed for both growth and draughts power
