Abstract

The system of breeding and selection of cassava practised in MARDI is related to the ability of the crop to be vegetatively propagated: through the selection of seedling clones. Selection criteria are listed and the importance of each is discussed. The breeding and selection scheme begins with evaluation of the germplasm collection to identify parental varieties for use in hybridizations and goes on with the selection of seedlings clones in single rows preliminary and advanced yield trials and finally in farmers' fields
