Abstract
A single pre-harvest spray of aqueous ethrel at various concentrations was tested to accelerate the onset of berry ripening in both the Robusta and Liberica coffees. From single harvests conducted three weeks after spraying treated plots of Robusta and Liberica had given approximately 60 and 40 per cent more ripe fruit respectively than the controls. For Robusta an once-off harvest for each sprayed crop was envisaged as a high proportion of the treated berries were already ripened at harvest. For Liberica response was not as good and two rounds of picking for each sprayed crop were still considered necessary. Cost-benefit analysis indicated that the ripening agent was far more profitable in Robusta. Average bean weight had been shown to be affected by the chemical
