Abstract

To provide data on the suitability of cocoa soil in relation to root density of cocoa a study was conducted on the farm of matured cocoa at the Institute of Agriculture Timbang Menggaris Kota Belud Sabah. The report on the effects of physical organic and chemical properties of the soil and root distribution was presented. From the study of physical properties of the soil it was found that lower soil depths; 40-60 60-80 and 80-100 cm had inferior aeration and poor drainage. Study of soil chemical properties showed that pH exchangeable K and Mg cation exchange capacity matter and exchangeable Ca were low. Due to the limitation on physical organic and chemical properties the soil of the matured cocoa can placed in the category of fairly good soil which was considered as class II. The limitations was amended with the good management practices in the future. Root distribution percentage of cocoa decreased with increased soil depths. Highest root distribution of 66 percentage was found in the top layer of 0-20 cm soil depths. Soil depth of 20-40 40-60 60-80 and 80-100 cm had 34 percentage of total root distribution. From the top layer of soil two thirds of moisture and nutrients was taken while one third of the total uptake was dependent on lower soil depths. However very marked limitations in lower soil depths affected the root development moisture and nutrient and nutrient uptake of the cocoa
