Rice bran constituted about 10 of the weight of paddy. Although bran production had increased correspondingly to the increase in paddy production the quantity of bran imported had also been increasing to meet the demand for animal feed. Depending on the types of mills three categories of bran i.e. bran No. 1 No. 2 and mixed bran were produced. Most of the brans were used for feedstuff and only a small quantity was being used for oil extraction. Rapid rancidification of the raw bran is a major problem in maintaining its quality. Although this problem would be overcome by heat treatment such practice was not observed by the rice millers as bran was regarded as secondary product of rice milling. In setting up a quality standard for rice bran physical properties composition of the bran and the factors affecting its quality should be considered
