Abstract

The jaundice and photosensitization syndrome seen in goats and sheep was a result of liver damage caused by total feeding of signal grass fed in the form of hay. The hepatotoxicity associated with this grass had been reported in countries of Latin America such as Colombia and Brazil. Similarly there were reports of such incidences in goats and sheep in Indonesia and Malaysia. Some of the signs seen were decrease in body weight yellowing of the mucus membrane of the eyes and vulva photosensitization increase in the serum glutamateoxaloacetate transaminase bilirubin values. Histopathology indicated hepatolobular necrosis. This paper discussed the incidences in other countries in the various goats and sheep farms in Malaysia and the studies conducted by Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute
