Abstract
Pest outbreaks in perennial crops are apparently more frequently in the tropics than in the temperate regions and this may partly be due to the increasing rate of conversion of tropical forests for agriculture as well as the frequent clearing of more or less stabilized plantations for replanting with either the same or new crop plants. The initial instability of newly-cultivated areas resembles very much the situation found in annual or short-term crops like rice.
