Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of planting systems on the growth and yield of pepper (Piper nigrum var. Kuching). Five planting systems namely the Bush Method Hedgerow Herringbone Low Trellis and Tall Trellis were compared with the Traditional system. All pepper vines in the Bush system of planting were significantly shorter than those grown on supports in the other systems. The vines showed no significant difference in canopy spread under all planting systems. During the first 18 months of growth no significant difference in stem diameter was detected between vines in all the planting systems. Measurement of stem diameter in June 1984 on matured vines showed that the Tall Trellis and Traditional systems had vines with larger stem diameter than those grown on low or no support of the other planting systems. The highest yield per vine was obtained from the Traditional system followed by the Tall Trellis system. They produced significantly higher yields than those grown on low supports. The Bush system produced the least yield. Based on per hectare basis the most economical system was the Tall Trellis. The Traditional system only gave a marginal profit while the other planting systems using low or no supports incurred heavy losses in net returns
