Abstract

Crop losses are a feature of agricultural systems in developing and developed nations of the world. Crop loss appraisal may be considered the problem definition phase of plant protection in comparison with pest management the problem resolution phase. Whether it is at a micro-level (single field farm) or macro-level (nation region) proper definition is essential before any rational decisions can be made on plant protection. At the micro-level this leads to pest or loss assessment from which different thresholds are formulated. At the macro-level crop loss appraisal provides the technology for surveillance for evaluating changes in crop productivity due to stresses and for setting crop protection policy based on current information. This paper discusses the following topics: 1) the database on global crop losses 2) crop loss appraisal technology and its significance and use in the tropics 3) some key areas for research and implementation in the tropics.
