Abstract
A survey of wildlife was conducted over three months in the Sabah Softwoods tree plantation to investigate preferences of larger mammals for different kinds of planted and natural forest. For about the first two years after planting grasses and herbs proliferate; and rusa barking deer civets and leopard cats are among the early colonizers. Later as the tree canopy closes bearded pig replaces rusa as the most common ungulate. Pigs appear in large numbers at certain times of year apparently in response to fruiting patterns in both planted and natural forest. An island of logged over forest within the plantation contained as abundance of other mammals including sun bear clouded leopard and an exceptional density of gibbons. It was thus a valuable refuge for wildlife. Gibbons were also found in forest that had been severely burned earlier in 1983. Around the edge of the plantation rusa deer cause significant damage to young Albizia falcataria and Gmelina arborea trees but this has been partly countered by planting unpalatable species in these areas. Pigs pig-controlled by a professional hunter whose records for the last two years are presented together with estimates of the extent of amateur hunting for the pot.
