Storage hardening of natural rubber: an examination of current mechanistic proposals

Burfield D.R ., . Storage hardening of natural rubber: an examination of current mechanistic proposals. pp. 202-208. ISSN 0127-7065

Abstract

The paper reviewed the evidence for the presence of reactive functional groups in natural rubber and critically examined the mechanisms proposed to account for the storage hardening phenomenon. The review recognised the complexity of the natural rubber system and suggested that current proposals were yet inadequate to explain all the observed characteristics of storage hardening. It was speculated that the prominent effect of humidity might be best accounted for by the formation of ionic crosslinks the strength of which were determined by the level of hydration of the ionic species
