Major sugarcane diseases and their control in Malaysia

Abstract

There has been a general decline in the yield of sugarcane over the last few years. This was partially attributed to diseases. Of the 42 diseases listed four were identified to be of major economic importance. These were smut Fiji disease ratoon stunting disease and rust. The aetiology of these four diseases were described and control measures suggested. With the replacement of the highly susceptible varieties such as NCo 310 and F 173 by the more tolerant varieties such as F 148 Ragnar NCo 376 GPB 5 and SP-70-1248 losses caused by smut and Fiji diseases were reduced
