Abstract

A study to determine the relationship between sowing method and seed size on coffee root deformity was carried out in the nursery. Five seed placements were tried out that was with seed radicles facing downwards upwards seeds lying sideways seed lying horizontal with seed crease facing upwards and downwards. Seed were classed as big medium or small based on their weights. Root deformity was significantly related to seed sowing placement but not with seed size. Seeds that were sown lying horizontally with centre crease facing downwards had the lowest rate of tap root deformity while seeds that were sown with centre crease facing upwards showed the highest incidence of tap root deformity. When compared with normal seedlings (with straight tap root) seedlings with deformed roots also had shorter roots and stems. Seed size had no significant effect on root deformity root length or on stem length. However the study showed that the big seeds gave the lowest incidence of deformed roots
