Preliminary selection of Coffea liberica and Coffea canephora (Robusta type) mother trees from local coffee growing areas was carried out after two years' monitoring of yield and mean fruit weight. The objectives were to identify potential mother trees for clonal and progeny evaluation. Mean fruit weight and fruit yield for the Liberica type ranged from 2.73 to 6.28 g and 3.69 to 25.81 kg/tree/year respectively. For the Robusta type it ranged from 1.32 to 1.79 g for mean fruit weight and from 0.70 to 5.78 kg/tree/year for mean yield. Significant differences in fruit weight and high coefficient of variability in fruit yield among the monitored mother trees were observed for both species. A total of 19 mother trees of the Liberica type from 47 originally selected were found to yield three times or more than the mean tree yield of that particular area. They were selected for clonal evaluation while the top 20 were selected for progeny trials. For Robusta coffee ten mother trees were selected for clonal and progeny evaluations
