Abstract
Rice varietal improvement programme which started 60 years ago comprised the selection and purification of traditional varieties. Later the successful incorporation of non-photoperiodic character into varieties such as Mahsuri and Malinja contributed to the smooth adoption and expansion of double cropping. In mid 1960s IR8 the 'miracle rice' was introduced and this led to the aggressive breeding efforts to improve grain quality and resistance against pests and diseases using IR8 as the base for yield and plant type. Many varieties were released. The coverage of these varieties as well as other unreleased varieties was also discussed
